How to tune guitar

Guitar unlike piano does not have a fixed tune that cannot be changed. On guitar, individuals have the opportunity to adjust tones to their taste and for their use.

Apart from that, tones on the guitar can be changed when it comes in contact with another object or when it is not properly placed and this makes the guitar distuned.

Tuning the guitar has to do with having music skills and music ears. Although there is a standard tuning application that even everyone should get, but building and developing music ears cannot be overemphasized as this is not only useful for tuning guitar; it cuts across other areas of playing skillfully. And it even makes it possible to tune the guitar where no tuning application is available.

Finger Exercise

Guitar Course for all levels

This aims to train one’s hands and fingers to be familiar with the guitar board, guitar frets, and guitar strings. It also helps to build speed and makes the finger more flexible on the guitar.

There can be no professionalism when it comes to playing guitar without considering speed (the time spent) and accuracy. Speed and accuracy are part of professionalism, so Finger Exercise helps one to be able to play different notes with speed, accuracy, and ease.

Added to this is the use of plectrum, also known as pick. This can be used to boost speed, and tone neatness. It can also make playing more audible than when one does not make use of it.

Finger Placement

Playing guitar with ease has a lot to do with the right placement. Each of the fingers must be properly placed. Just like other instruments such as piano, saxophone, trumpet, etc. There are basic rules for finger placement and each finger plays different tones.

It is interesting to note that when playing guitar, one hand does the striking and the other the finger placement.

 Scales on guitar

Guitar, like piano, has scales which can be applied in the course of playing. We have a diatonic scale, pentatonic, chromatic scale and so on. Each of these scales differs from one another and makes different melodies. There are several hundreds or even thousands of scales. Although some scales are not common, but then, knowing how to apply the common ones is essential to playing skillfully, but to play more professionally one needs to even know some of the other scales that are rarely used.

How to identify keys

Playing without first identifying the key is like someone trying to force oneself into a building that is locked. Why the struggle?

To enter a room that is locked, one needs a key and that’s all one needs to have access to the room. So also, to play the guitar, one needs to identify all the different keys on the guitar and be able to identify the particular key one is playing at a particular time. Although, it is possible to play guitar, even when one does not know what key one is playing at a particular time, but this has to do first with building music ears then a prior knowledge of all the different keys and how to identify keys.

How to pick keys

As it has been said earlier that to play guitar, one needs to be able to identify the keys, to pick a particular key one needs to be familiar with all the keys and one must have his music ears rightly tuned. Because failure to have one’s ears tuned will amount to sheer waste of time even if one can identify the keys because the tendency of such a person to go “off” is inevitable and the beauty of music is the melody, not noise. So it is no more music when it lacks melody, it only becomes noise.

Guitar chords

As there are several scales on the guitar, so also there are several chords. We have major chords and minor chords. When you play chord, your hand is positioned on the guitar board with each of the fingers picking different notes, and doing so, you play them together at the same time. In other words, playing chords on the guitar has to do with playing different (three or four) tones at the same time together.

If you know what chords are, then you know what arpeggios are, because the only difference between chords and arpeggios is that in the former you play the tones together at the same time but in arpeggios, you only play out the tones one after the other still following the same pattern and arrangement as in chords.

Guitar Duets

What are Duets?

Simply put, duets are a combination of two notes that can blend and make melody, that is double. To have a catch of duets or what it means to play duets on guitar. Having known how to play chords or arpeggios, all you just need do is play the first two notes, especially in the major chords.

This is where creativity comes into play, because it has to do with the application of all or most the skills and even the points listed above. So, to freestyle, one needs to know how and when to apply the skills and the right skill to apply at a particular time and in a particular music.
